Fire Safety Plans

National and Provincial Fire Codes and Municipal Bylaws require Fire Safety Plans for certain types of building occupancies, conforming to the requirements of Part 2, Section 2.8 of the National and Provincial Fire Codes.  The local “Authority Having Jurisdiction” (typically the local fire department) must review and approve this plan.  The owner of the building, or authorized agent of the owner, is responsible for the development, implementation and regular updating of the plan.

Fire Safety Plans should be designed to suit the resources of each individual building or complex of buildings.  They are intended to assist the owner of a building with the basic essentials for the safety of all occupants, to ensure an orderly evacuation at the time of an emergency and to provide a maximum degree of flexibility to achieve the necessary fire safety for the building.

A well designed Fire Safety Plan covers:

  • the types of fires that can occur;
  • locations and what type of fire extinguishers will be used in which cases;
  • fire alarm procedures; evacuation plans, emergency routes and assembly areas to be followed in the case of fire;
  • procedures for recognizing and reporting unsafe conditions; and
  • service locations and service schedules for fire protection equipment.

The Fire Safety Plan is contained in a marked red vinyl binder, with an electronic copy saved by the owner.  The binder is usually stored in a Fire Safety Plan Box, located near the alarm panel inside the building, with evacuation plans posted at strategic locations throughout the building.

EMT Management works with clients to design, develop, install and implement Fire Safety Plans that conform to all relevant codes and local bylaws.
